What we are
The Recreation Division is responsible for the staffing, programming, and management of the Ukiah Municipal Swimming Pools for aquatic programs and events. Every summer, the Municipal Pools host public swim, swim lessons, and aquatic fitness classes. Aquatics Staff also operates concessions from the pool facility, offering an array of healthy snacks and seasonally appropriate treats.
The division now offers special events including Neon Nights and Dive-In Movies. The public swim season has been increased to run from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Aquatics fitness classes are held in the fall if weather permits.
The Aquatics Division offers Free Swim events during the annual 4th of July event, ‘All-American Picnic in the Park’, and ‘Blast Off to Summer.' Aquatics also provides the facility and staffing for the swimming portion of the Kids Triathlon.

COVID-19 Budgetary Response
PERSONNEL
We have reduced the Aquatics part-time staffing budget by more than 30%. This may need to be reduced further if we are not able to offer Public Swim, Lap Swim, Aquatics Classes or special events and rentals. At this time we are only running Swim Lessons and Day Camp swim, both on very limited levels.
Special training, cleaning procedures, safety protocols all take time and coordination to operate programs successfully. Coordination of this is paramount but tedious to execute, putting strain on everyone’s time and stress levels.
SERVICES AND OTHER OPERATING
We have reduced the Aquatics supplies, specialty supplies and equipment maintenance repair to lower levels than are realistic for even limited operation. If programming increases or anything needs to be repaired, we will need to amend the budget quickly.
CAPITAL
The Division did not have any direct capital outlay projects.
Future Objectives
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Objectives will be reviewed and adjusted throughout the year.
NEAR-TERM
- All upper level aquatics staff trained to certify Lifeguards and provide CPR/AED/First Aid certifications.
- Offer additional Lifeguard, CPR and AED certification courses to outside agencies. DEPARTMENT/DIVISION COMMENTS: This would position Ukiah as the ‘go to’ agency in the County.
- Expand partnership with Ukiah High School. DEPARTMENT/DIVISION COMMENTS: Enable us to host activities at their pool for special needs children and additional location for swim lessons.
- Continue to partner with US Army Corp of Engineers on events and activities at Lake Mendocino. DEPARTMENT/DIVISION COMMENTS: Paddle-board classes, Teen Program days, staff trainings and other activities will continue be provided.
- Increase special events at aquatics facility. DEPARTMENT/DIVISION COMMENTS: Multiple Neon Nights, Dive In Movies and other special events are planned.
INTERMEDIATE-TERM
- Restructure facility to maximize space and provide more areas for parties and special events. DEPARTMENT/DIVISION COMMENTS: Staff is working to adjust fencing, landscaping and other hardscape to create a new usable space within the facility.
LONG-TERM
- Continue to explore partnerships for new programming opportunities and expanded use of the pool facility.
