The public safety data made available by Tompkins County and published in this dashboard originates from various databases. The collection of demographic data is not standardized across public safety agencies and may not show up consistently in the dashboards below.

Calls for Service to 911 Dispatch Center
The data in this section helps the community to better understand 911 calls for service and information about policing in Tompkins County. Data on calls for service is provided by the Emergency Communications Center (ECC) and the database where law enforcement tracks incidents. The ECC is part of the Tompkins County Department of Emergency Response and is responsible for dispatching calls to local law enforcement and emergency services agencies.

Alternatives to Incarceration
In Tompkins County offenders may participate in several alternatives to incarceration (ATIs) as part of a sentence. Data on ATIs is provided by the Tompkins County District Attorney.

Glossary of Terms
Arrest Type When an individual is arrested they are assigned an arrest type reflecting the level of offense, icluding felony, misdemeanor, etc.
Case Categories Classification of criminal cases into groups such as felonies, misdemeanors, and violations, based on the severity and nature of the offenses.
Dispatch The Tompkins County Department of Emergency Response dispatches calls for service to local emergency response agencies, including fire, law enforcement, and emergency medical services.
Disposition The final resolution or outcome of a legal case or criminal charge, which can include convictions, dismissals, acquittals, or alternative sentencing.
Family Court The Family Court hears and determines most legal issues involving children and families. There is a Family Court within each County of the State which is authorized to hear matters relating to:
- custody, visitation and guardianship
- monetary support for children, spouses and ex-spouses
- paternity
- abuse and neglect of children
- violence among family members
- children accused of committing crimes (JD)
- children in need of supervision (PINS)
Law Enforcement Incident/Response Area Areas referenced in IPD and TCSO data above are coded as viewed on this map.
Nature Code A classification used by emergency services or first responders to categorize the reason or type of a call for service, based on the nature of the incident reported. A distinction is made between reported nature codes which are used by the 911 call center, and observed nature codes which are used by emergency services personnel. A list of the nature codes used locally can be found on this document published by the Department of Emergency Response.
Observed Offense An offense identified and documented by law enforcement based on observation or investigation, prior to formal charges or legal action. Also known as observed nature codes.
Representation The legal act of a lawyer or legal advisor acting on behalf of an individual or group in legal proceedings, ensuring their rights are protected and voice heard. The Assigned Counsel Program uses panel attorneys dedicated to the legal representation of the indigent population in Tompkins County.
