Target: Enhance specialized knowledge needed to address cybercrime.

While preventing property and violent crime is an ongoing and primary concern for the City of Tallahassee, efforts to combat more widespread and ever-present cybercrime issues are needed as well. This initiative lays the groundwork for City police to seek out and attend advanced training on detecting cyber-crime. By doing so, the City of Tallahassee will be better equipped to provide citizens with the information needed to protect themselves and will support law enforcement when working through the complexity of these types of investigations.

As a part of this initiative, officers are attending trainings specific to cybercrime including Social Media Investigations, Collaboration to Combat Online Child Exploitation, Crypto-Investigators Seminar, Dark Web & Open Source Intelligence, among other specialized trainings. The crypto currency trainings have proved valuable as the skills learned have already helped TPD’s Financial Crimes Unit solve cryptocurrency investigations. In a particular case, TPD officers were able to assist a federal investigation related to Bitcoin. Moving forward, the City will continue to prioritize cybercrime training to ensure the safety of our community. TPD will also work with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to share ideas and information to further help combat cyber-related crime.
