Seed Starter Kits

In March, the St. Charles Public Library offered patrons a chance to get a jump start on summer gardening with our first-ever grab and go kits especially for adults.

Patrons selected one of three available seed options: herbs, flowers, or the Inciardi paste tomato.

The Inciardi tomato has a remarkable story. This paste tomato was first brought to America from Sicily by Henry Inciardi and family. The seeds were sewn into their clothes to prevent from being confiscated at Ellis Island. The family settled in Chicago and continued to grow the seeds for decades. After it was nearly extinct, the tomato was brought back by a handful of local gardeners. Today, it is grown almost exclusively in the Chicagoland area, and we are pleased to be able to offer it to our patrons.
