In January, Circulation staff filled 12,498 holds for SCPLD Patrons!
Services by Request
(Interlibrary Loan is the ability to get our patrons materials that are not available at our library or within our SWAN consortium. *Please note: Due to the way they are collected, our interlibrary loan statistical numbers are always one month behind.)
Book Club Service
We can help your book club get the books you need!
- We welcomed three new community book clubs this month.
- We purchased four new sets in January:
- More than 50% of our titles this month came from our set collection, which is made up of popular titles.
- This month we had a subject trend. Three book titles had to do with the natural world. In COVID times, experts are telling us that it is healthy to reconnect to nature, so maybe that's what we're seeing?
- We have 58 registered clubs (including library groups).
Fast track New Materials & Purchase Requests
We provide materials for patron holds as fast as we can!
- We expedited 700 items for patrons in January.
- Some popular new titles added this month include:
The Push by Ashley Audrain (Adult)
Lore by Alexandra Bracken (Young Adult)
- If an item fits our collection guidelines, we will order items for patrons based upon requests.
- 49 items were ordered to fill patron requests!

Teen General Programs
Youth General Programs
This month Youth Services rolled out 160 program kits--20 more than December 2020!
These ToGo! Kits offered patrons a complete program in a bag. All 160 kits were picked up by patrons!
Searching for South America with Brian Michalski
Our most popular adult program during the month of January was Searching for South America with Brian Michalski.
Fresh off his most recent travels, the Mindful Vagabond, Brian Michalski enthralled us with photography and vignettes gathered from exploring and working in South America for more than a year. As he trekked the Inca Trail, navigated pristine Patagonia and explored the Amazon rainforest, he also volunteered, took Spanish classes, earned his English teaching certificate and worked remotely. Brian overcame obstacles; including one so immense, it could take only the collective help of his loved ones to save him. Searching for South America speaks directly to our goals related to embracing cultural diversity. It is critical to remain curious about others’ customs so as to develop a better understanding of our world.
Adult Outreach Programs
Outreach Services established a new facility partnership with Silver Glen Senior Living, a new senior facility in South Elgin, IL that offers three (3) different levels of care along with independent living.
Youth Outreach Programs
Our Youth Preschool Outreach Librarian held 17 virtual storytimes with 595 attendees. This month’s outreach storytime theme was perspectives and included Facts vs. Opinions vs. Robots by Michael Rex to teach the difference between facts and opinions, which is a very important concept to teach to children at a young age.
Miss Katelyn's Neighborhood: Let's Visit the Library! Part 1
A popular Youth program was this month's episode of Miss Katelyn's Neighborhood!
Join Miss Katelyn as she visits the St. Charles Public Library!
This is part 1 where we learn about the Circulation Department and the Administration Department. Visit the library online at scpld.org to learn more and see up to date information about our renovation.
Sending a big thank you to Dana and Virginia!
