Departmental Overview
The Public Works Department performs a wide variety of services that contribute to the quality of life in San Benito County. These include maintenance and construction work on the county’s extensive road and bridge infrastructure, maintenance of County buildings and grounds, management of three County parks, mapping and reviewing development plans, planning and development for housing, managing recycling and refuse disposal/collection for the County including, managing Landfill operations contract with Waste Connections, Inc., and services for the maintenance of County Service Areas (CSA) and Community Facilities Districts (CFD).

Recent Departmental Accomplishments
• Applied for and obtained $2.6 million for major road repair to New Idria road washout.
• Implemented procedures to identify funding sources, eg, SB1, Measure G, Regional Surface Transportation Program, and to track road and bridge projects to funding sources to minimize funding issues for projects in progress.
• Hired up to full budgeted headcount for Administrative group. Some of the results were: 1) Completed processing large vendor invoice backlog by the Auditor's Office deadline in August 2022; 2) Cash receipts since 6/30/22 have been deposited regularly, eliminating occurrences of large sums of undeposited receipts at any point in time during the year; 3) Land developer deposits and costs are kept current by our newly hired Accountant II which enables Finance/Accounting to respond to Planning and Developers request for balances owed as well as to bill developers in a timely manner for cost reimbursement.
Top Departmental Concerns
• Improve processes for coordination of workflow and communication among Public Works Engineering, Planning and Building, and Finance/Accounting to more efficiently and accurately record and monitor financial transactions.
• Provide adequate staffing for the Public Works Engineering group in order to manage workflow for public works projects and responsibilities.
• Finding ways to streamline business processes to accommodate huge growth in Public Records requests with limited staff resources

• Utilize technology and other resources to increase staff productivity gains exponentially with minimal cost• Develop strategies to accommodate long-term County growth projections with limited resource
