Division Overview

As part of the San Benito County Probation Department the Juvenile Hall’s mission is to provide a safe and secure environment for detained youth, where professional staff holds residents accountable while encouraging them to embrace positive community values, accept responsibility and cultivate healthy relationships. This mission is accomplished by ensuring staff serve as role models and project an appearance, attitude and behavior which creates an atmosphere conducive to positive change, and by working closely with our community partners to deliver research driven programs targeting the individual needs of our population.

Recent Departmental Accomplishments

  • Development of the Garden Project and related educational component
  • The addition of a LCSW through Wellpath in conjunction with the Sheriff’s Department
  • Updated the policy manual through the Lexipol system
  • Purchased and installed a new utility shed.
  • Facilitated transports to Juvenile Court hearings due to the move of the Juvenile Court to the Superior Court.
  • Completed a successful recruitment for Juvenile Institution Officers
  • Improvement in the quality of food served to detained youths
  • Successfully conducted and evacuation drill

Top Departmental Concerns

  • Continue to comply with Title 15 standards with the challenges presented by the COVID19 Crisis
  • Initial training for new staff and ongoing training for existing staff
  • Converting the former Juvenile Courtroom to a training room
  • Develop procedures for implementing updated policies

Long Range Planning Goals (3-5 years) For Department

  • Develop and implement more evidence based programming and practices
  • Continue to provide outdoor educational opportunities for youth
  • With the San Benito County Office of Education develop a program to prepare youths to participate in a community vocational education program
  • Develop an employee retention plan and succession preparedness plan
  • Annually review and update policies and procedures to increase safety, reduce liability and maintain compliance with Title 15 and Title 24 regulations
