Division Overview

The mission of the San Benito County District Attorney's Office is to do justice, by protecting the innocent, holding the guilty accountable, securing the rights of victims, maintaining due process for defendants, and caring for the needs of the community through a devotion to the truth.

Major Services and Activities

The Office of the District Attorney is the public prosecutor, who has the responsibility to attend court and conduct all prosecutions for criminal offenses on behalf of the People of the State of California

 

In addition, the District Attorney's Office assists victims and witnesses through court process and to apply for various aid and state programs available to victims of crime.

 

The District Attorney's Office also investigates cases through the District Attorney's Investigations Unit. This unit also is tasked with service of process for unwilling or uncooperative witnesses, takes statements from victims and witnesses, and performs other sensitive investigations.

Approximately 1700 Cases referred for review.

 

Approximately 1300 Cases with charges filed.

 

20% Felony Cases

74% Misdemeanor Cases

5% Other (Civil/Traffic Infraction)

 

7 Cases tried before jury to completion.

 

High Profile Animal Cruelty case successfully tried to verdict.

 

Implemented Race-Blind Charging successfully.

 

Nearing Completion on Court Interface (IT) project with use of existing staff.

 

Retention of Staff has provided for high efficiencies as all attorneys now have at least 3 years of prosecution experience.
