CENSUS 2020
Division Overview
The U.S Constitution mandates that a census be taken every ten years to count all people - both citizens and noncitizens - living in the United States. Responding to the census is mandatory because getting a complete and accurate count of the population is critically important. An accurate count of the population serves as the basis for fair and political representation and plays a vital role in many areas of public life.
The Census 2020 Unit oversees community engagement and outreach activities. The 2020 Census is so much more than just a headcount; it’s an opportunity for San Benito County to be counted. It is a picture of America that defines how many congressional seats are apportioned, how state and federal dollars are dispersed, redistricting, where businesses chose to open new stores. Every Californian has the constitutional right to be counted. The count needs to be accurate to display who we are, what we look like, and what our needs are as these are a critical factor in defining the distribution of resources to our country.
