Departmental Overview

The Public Works Department performs a wide variety of services that contribute to the quality of life in San Benito County. These include maintenance and construction work on the county’s extensive road and bridge infrastructure, maintenance of County buildings and grounds, management of three County parks, mapping and reviewing development plans, planning and development for housing, managing recycling and refuse disposal/collection for the County including, managing Landfill operations contract with Waste Connections, Inc., and services for the maintenance of County Service Areas (CSA) and Community Facilities Districts (CFD).

Staff

Recent Departmental Accomplishments

• Completion of Hospital Road Bridge.

• Applied for and obtained $133K of emergency funds from CALOES for 2019 storms. Applying for another $2 million for major road repair to New Idria road.

• Implemented procedures to more closely monitor project expenditures and link them to funding sources.

• Obtained $750,000 State grant for Regional Park parking lot slated to begin construction in the summer of 2022.

• Conversion of Assistant RMA Director position to Administrative Services Manager position, and filling that position with a qualified candidate, to enable focusing on Road fund project financial reporting as required by the State Controller’s Office. This is critical in order to avoid the potential loss of State/Federal grants through non-compliance of required accounting guidelines.

Top Departmental Concerns

• Public Works engineering, Capital Projects administration, and Administrative is understaffed and warrants more personnel

• Attracting and retaining competent staffing

• Finding ways to streamline business processes to accommodate huge growth in Public Records requests with limited staff resources
