On average, how often do Officer-Involved Shooting incidents occur?

Phoenix Police Officers fire a weapon very infrequently when interacting with individuals. Each year, officers respond to approximately 846,000 calls for service (673,890 citizen-generated and 172,409 officer-initiated) and make around 38,000 adult arrests. Only 0.003% of these calls and 0.066% of arrests result in an officer-involved shooting. (Based on data from 2018-2021)

Note: Phoenix police precincts vary in geographic size. The proportion of OIS incidents across each police precinct is not expected to be equivalent.

If an officer discharged his/her firearm at more than one subject within the same incident, the counts will reflect the total number of individuals fired at.

This chart shows the number and percentage of officer-involved shooting incidents by the individuals' weapon type for each year starting in 2017.

Counts are based on grouped categories for weapon (firearm, bladed object, blunt object, vehicle, or other).

Note: Actual firearms as well as replica firearms are included in the firearm category.

Number of OIS Incidents by Individual Injury Level and Year

This chart shows the number and percentage of officer-involved shooting incidents by the individuals' injury level for each year starting in 2017.

Counts reflect the severity of injury sustained from the discharge of the officer’s firearm.

Note: Injuries resulting from other interactions during the OIS incident (such as canine extraction, electronic control device deployment, etc.) are not reflected in this chart.
