Fire Station 2 

 

The District purchased 2293 Capitol Avenue for $685,000 on November 29, 2007. This property, along with an adjacent property purchased on June 27, 2006, at 2299 Capitol Avenue in the amount of $603,000, were joined together with the existing Fire Station 2 lot to form 100 feet wide by 200 feet deep area on which to construct a new, improved, and modern three bay, drive through, 12,562 square foot fire station, which also included a new detached communication building and 100’ monopole. In fiscal year 2011-2012, the District entered a contract with S.C. Builders for the construction of site improvements which included the construction of the rear driveway and parking along with the communication building and monopole.  S.C. Builders completed the work in December 2012. Shortly thereafter the temporary trailer was constructed and placed allowing for the firefighters to be relocated out of the existing fire station. DL Falk Construction Inc. was awarded the contract in December 2013 to construct the new fire station, and the notice of completion was filed in October 2016.  

 

Fire Station 2 has the primary response areas of the City of East Palo Alto, City of Menlo Park, and San Francisco Bay. Station 2 is the busiest fire station in the District. Staffed units at this station include Engine 2 with a captain and two firefighters, one being a qualified engineer, Truck 2 with one captain, two truck operators and one firefighter, and Battalion 101. Each unit, excluding Battalion 101, has at least one licensed paramedic providing advanced life support services. There are no capital improvement projects currently proposed for FY 2025-26 at Fire Station 2.

Fire Station 2 - Dorm Rooms

Fire Station 2 was built with eight dorm rooms on the second floor, each featuring exposed ceilings that extend up to the metal roof. This open design results in poor noise control, especially during rainfall. Additionally, four of the dorm rooms have limited control over their HVAC systems. It is essential for the health and well-being of the firefighters to have individual sleeping spaces that are dark, quiet, and temperature-controlled.

 

To enhance these dorm rooms, it is recommended to add acoustic treatment to all eight rooms and modify the HVAC systems in the four rooms with limited control. The proposed improvements include installing acoustic panels with insulation in all eight dorms, modifying the fire sprinkler system, lowering the fire alarm devices, and replacing the existing branch selectors serving the four dorm rooms that have inadequate temperature control.

 

Once completed, all eight dorm rooms will benefit from improved noise reduction and full temperature control. The estimated cost for this ceiling and HVAC upgrade project is $150,000.
