On July 31, 2008, the District purchased a property behind the station, at 1231 Hoover Street, for $1,507,300 to establish enough functional area to be used to support a new fire station to replace the aging, undersized station located at 700 Oak Grove Avenue, which was constructed in 1953. In October 2016 the Board awarded a contract to Gonsalves and Stronck Construction Co. Inc. for the construction of an 8,335 square-foot fire station and a 1,005 sq. ft. engine display building to store and display the District’s antique apparatus.
Additionally, the contractor was tasked with the relocation of the Fire District’s carriage house from Fire Station 1 to Fire Station 6. Construction started in November 2016 and the notice of completion for the multi-phased project was issued in May 2019. Proposed for FY 2025-26 is the modification to the front driveway ramp at Fire Station 6.
Fire Station 6 has the primary response areas of the downtown commercial district of the City of Menlo Park and the Town of Atherton. Because of its proximity to El Camino Real, it provides mutual aid to the City of Palo Alto. Staffed units at this station include Engine 6 with a captain and two firefighters, one being a qualified engineer, and Battalion 1. At least one of the three personnel is a licensed paramedic who provides advanced life support services.
Fire Station 6 Driveway Ramp Modification
The drivers of our apparatus at Fire Station 6 have identified an ongoing issue that is causing undue stress on our fire engines. When traffic is present in the eastbound lane of Oak Grove, the driver is forced to drive over the driveway curb when exiting the station. This has led to noticeable damage, with chunks missing from the Captain’s side dual wheels. This not only presents a potential safety hazard with the rear wheels but could also lead to more frequent and costly wheel replacements. Both issues could be addressed by softening the curb. The project involves extending the driveway by approximately 5 feet.
