Fire Station 2
The District purchased 2293 Capitol Avenue for $685,000 on November 29, 2007. This property, along with an adjacent property purchased on June 27, 2006, at 2299 Capitol Avenue in the amount of $603,000, were joined together with the existing Fire Station 2 lot to form 100 feet wide by 200 feet deep area on which to construct a new, improved, and modern three bay, drive through, 12,562 square foot fire station, which also included a new detached communication building and 100’ monopole. In fiscal year 2011-2012, the District entered into a contract with S.C. Builders for the construction of site improvements which included the construction of the rear driveway and parking along with the communication building and monopole. S.C. Builders completed the work in December 2012. Shortly thereafter the temporary trailer was constructed and placed allowing for the firefighters to be relocated out of the existing fire station. DL Falk Construction Inc. was awarded the contract in December 2013 to construct the new fire station and the notice of completion was filed in October 2016. The District currently has one capital improvement project at Fire Station 2 approved in FY 24-25 which is for the replacement of the apparatus bay doors. The original bi-fold apparatus bay doors that were installed open inwards which reduce the usable space of the apparatus bay by ten feet. Currently there is not sufficient space to provide circulation around the apparatus that are housed inside of it. By replacing the apparatus bay doors, the District will regain ten feet inside the apparatus bay allowing for sufficient, safe circulation.
Fire Station 2 has the primary response areas of the City of East Palo Alto, City of Menlo Park, and San Francisco Bay. Station 2 is the busiest fire station in the District. Staffed units at this station include Engine 2 with a captain and two firefighters, one being a qualified engineer, Truck 2 with one captain, two truck operators and one firefighter, and Battalion 101. Each unit, excluding Battalion 101, has at least one licensed paramedic providing advanced life support services.
Fire Station #2-Apparatus Bay Doors Project
Fire Station 2 was designed and constructed with front and rear bi-fold apparatus bay doors. These bi-fold doors open inwards which reduces the usable space by approximately 10 feet. Over the years the District has shifted its deployment model to include a tiller truck, heavy rescue and a battalion chief vehicle at this fire station. The increase in apparatus quantity and size has reduced the clearances around the apparatus to an unsafe amount. In order to maintain the aesthetics of the station and to gain space inside the apparatus bay to provide the necessary clearances it has been proposed to retrofit the doors so that they swing outward instead of inward. The District is also considering replacing the apparatus bay doors with sectional doors.
