How Much Unclaimed Property Does Your Parish Have?

Unclaimed property consists of account balances, outstanding checks, and other financial instruments, being held at corporations, financial institutions, life insurance companies and various other entities. When checks are not cashed or accounts go dormant, and the company is unable to locate the owner, the funds are sent to the Treasurer’s Office for safekeeping. Common types of unclaimed property include unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts, uncashed payroll checks, stock dividends, and utility deposit refunds.

More than 207,000 Louisiana Residents Received an Unclaimed Property Check this Year—the Highest Number of Claims ever Processed in the State's History.

Returning More of Your Money....Faster!

The Department of Treasury set a record this year returning $51.8 million in unclaimed property to more than 207,000 Louisiana residents...and we did so faster than ever before.

How did we do that? Partnering with the the Louisiana Department of Revenue, we passed common sense legislation in 2018 to allow the Department of Revenue and the Department of Treasury to share databases. Integrating innovative technologies into our processes not only allowed us to increase the number of checks sent out by nearly 500%, but we also reduced the administrative cost of issuing each check by 80%.

Each year businesses turn over millions of dollars in unclaimed cash, stocks, bonds, securities and insurance proceeds to the Department of Treasury. Those funds are called "Unclaimed Property," and become lost through the normal course of business, usually because of a bad address. The Louisiana Department of Treasury is legally required to maintain the funds in safekeeping, no matter how long it takes the rightful owner to come forward.
