How Much Unclaimed Property Does Your Parish Have?

Unclaimed property consists of account balances, outstanding checks, and other financial instruments, being held at corporations, financial institutions, life insurance companies and various other entities. When checks are not cashed or accounts go dormant, and the company is unable to locate the owner, the funds are sent to the Treasurer’s Office for safekeeping. Common types of unclaimed property include unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts, uncashed payroll checks, stock dividends, and utility deposit refunds.

Returning More of Your Money....Faster!

The Department of Treasury set a record this year returning $70.6 million in unclaimed property to more than 160,000 Louisiana residents.

How did we do that? In 2018 we partnered with the Louisiana Department of Revenue to pass common sense legislation allowing our agencies to share databases.

Integrating innovative technologies into our processes allowed us to increase the number of checks sent out by nearly 500% and reduce the administrative cost of issuing each check by 80%.

Each year businesses turn over millions of dollars in unclaimed cash, stocks, bonds, securities and insurance proceeds to the Department of Treasury. Those funds are called "Unclaimed Property," and become lost through the normal course of business, usually because of a bad address. The Louisiana Department of Treasury is legally required to maintain the funds in safekeeping, no matter how long it takes the rightful owner to come forward.
