Annual Concrete Rehabilitation
Have a question about the annual concrete project? Read below to find out more!
What is the concrete rehabilitation project?
The City maintains approximately eight million square feet of sidewalk and 1.2 million linear feet of curb and gutter.
Public Works annually evaluates the sidewalk and curb and gutter city-wide and prioritizes the work based on a number of factors, including severity, geographic location, and upcoming capital projects and utility work.
Each year, the City replaces sidewalk to avoid potential liability risk and harm to residents. The project also includes curb and gutter, curb ramps, cross gutters, and tree wells.
What is the process for the concrete project?
1. Evaluation

Each year, the City inspects all concrete improvements within the public right-of-way. Additionally, residents may make a request through the City website or Cypress Central mobile app.
Locations are prioritized for repairs and/or replacement. Locations that are not eligible for replacement are placed on a deferred list that is updated annually.
2. Temporary Repairs

Concrete sidewalks and curb and gutters that do not warrant replacment may receive a temporary fix, such as grinding or patching to eliminate any vertical displacements.
Areas that pose a higher liability risk or exhibit more extensive damage may be added to the annual concrete rehabilitation project.
3. Concrete Rehabilitation
The annual project replaces lifted and damaged concrete sidewalks, curb and gutters, driveways, curb ramps, and cross gutters as identified on the priority list.
It is important to note that this project does not replace any cracked or damaged concrete that poses no liability risk and is strictly cosmetic.
Why are trees being removed?
As part of the project, some trees may be removed due to recurring damage to the concrete improvements. The owner of the property in which the subject tree is located has the right to deny the tree removal. In this case, the damaged concrete is not replaced and the contractor will either grind or provide a temporary asphalt patch.
If the homeowner elects to remove the tree, they will have an option to select a new tree to be replanted.

How will I be affected?
The contractor will coordinate the work as to not impact street sweeping or trash pickup in your area.
"No Parking" signs with the exact date of the closure will be posted adjacent to the areas of work at least 48-hours in advance of the work.
Can I do the repairs myself?
Yes, however, if you wish to do so, the full cost must be paid for by the property owner.
Additionally, the qualified contractor (licensed and insured) must apply for a Public Works Encroachment Permit to perform work in the public right-of-way.
