Source of Supply
Water
Mission
Why We Exist
This Source of Supply Division provides operation and maintenance for the Florida River intake structure, flow monitoring equipment, nine miles of pipeline, and outlet structure that delivers raw water, by gravity, to Terminal Reservoir. The Florida River is the primary and year-round source of supply to the WTP. The Animas River (secondary supply) is pumped from the Santa Rita pump station to the reservoir, typically May through September, during peak demand. Operation and maintenance of this pump station is also the responsibility of WTP staff. The Animas River is also available year-round in the event of an off-season loss of the Florida supply. This division also supplies raw water for irrigation purposes to Hillcrest Golf Course, Fort Lewis College, Smith Field, Riverview Sports Complex and Memorial Park. This Division supports the overall visions of Ensure Effective Infrastructure Network, Enhanced Livability and Sense of Place and
Environmental and Social Sustainability.
Key Functions
What We Do
- Operate and maintain intake structure, flow monitoring equipment, nine miles of pipeline, and outlet structure
- Maintain maximum allotment that is designated and enforced by the Colorado Division of Water Resources and are consistent with the City of Durango water rights. This reduces pumping costs and carbon footprint from the Animas, May – September
- Operate and maintain intake structure, pump station, 3 miles of 30” pipeline, and outlet structure.
- Closely monitor Animas River during weather events to avoid pumping high turbid runoff from 416 fire burn scar, to ensure high-quality water delivered to Terminal Reservoir.
- Operate and maintain earthen dam, outlet structure, and raw water piping to College Mesa Water Treatment Plant.
- Maintain adequate raw water storage in Terminal reservoir during peak demand. To provide a reliable and high-quality raw water supply to College Mesa Water Treatment Plant.
- Supply and meter raw water for irrigation for Hillcrest Golf Course, Fort Lewis College, Smith Field, Riverview Spots Complex, and Memorial Park. Enhancing Livability and Sense of Place and reduces carbon footprint by not having to treat and pump water to these facilities.
FY 2021 Strategic Accomplishments
Ensure Effective Infrastructure Network (EEIN)
- Completed installation of soft start motor control system for 3-500 HP pump motors. Reducing the demand charge from LPEA and the wear and tear on pumps and motors.
- Procure replacement pump and motor for Santa Rita.
FY 2021-2022 Our Strategic Initiatives
- Installation of a new pump and motor at Santa Rita Pump Station. Rebuild the old one to have as a spare.
