What We Do
The Durango Police Department will uphold the Charter of the City of Durango, the laws of Colorado and the Constitution of the United States. We will serve our diverse community with respect, dignity, integrity and with the utmost moral and ethical character.
We strive to be the premiere Police Department by embracing the highest standards and best practices. We will develop, retain and invest in the success of our team members. We are committed to reducing crime through innovation and leading edge technologies.
Through community engagement, we will collaborate with our citizens and local partners to address issues and improve quality of life, making Durango the best place to live, work and play.

Enhanced Livability and Sense of Place (ELS)
- Restructure community complaint review committee/program
- Created DEI panel
- Spillman single server
- Co-Responder team
- Resiliency program

- Reached full hiring capacity
- Became compliant with FBI reporting
- Additional sergeant position

- Eliminated districts and moved to closest car dispatch
- Created a statistical approach to rotating shifts
- Navigated COVID without office shutdown
- Established Main Avenue camera project with license plate recognition on one intersection
- Obtained large server for all city surveillance cameras
- Obtained mobile fingerprint readers (at no cost) and deployed in patrol fleet with policy in place.
- Obtained Livescan fingerprint machine (at no cost)
- Added a detective to the Special Investigations Unit
FY 2021-2022 Our Strategic Initiatives
Enhanced Livability and Sense of Place (ELS)
- Implement Reimagine Policing Concept
- Co-Responder Team with Axis – first team in place, second team by 2nd quarter of 2021
- Collaboration with MANNA Navigation Center through the police department’s Homeless Outreach Coordinator to divert non-police service calls
- Reduce violent crimes by partnering with community leaders and area law enforcement agencies
- Implement five hot spot patrols to deter, reduce and suppress criminal-related activities
- Collaborate with the Southwest Auto Theft task force to reduce auto theft 10% by 2022
- Increase staffing levels to match service needs and increased city growth
- Number of community-oriented policing activities held annually
- Reinstitute the community engagement team (CET) in 2022
- Host and participate in minimum monthly engagement events
